Flying Bat Warm-up

Happy October and almost Halloween!

I made this wreath this past weekend and I’m pretty in love with it. I got the inspiration on Pinterest which led me to this blog. It was so easy: grapevine wreath, cheese cloth, spiders, and bow (the ghost is a costume I made for my deer doorknocker), plus I get to reuse the grapevine wreath all year long for more seasonal decorations! Cute and reusable. Win, win.

I’m having a lot of fun exploring Halloween themes in my classes this month, too. I love finding a way to take a staple in our routine, like peanut-butter-sandwich-feet, and layer holiday imagery on to it. So this month instead of making sandwiches, we are pretending to be bats! photo(72)

With the bottoms of our feet together and hands on our ankles, we flap our bat wings up and down. Then we “swoop” by letting our head lead us down and up over our right knee, then our left knee. I ask, “How do bats sleep?” and they all chime, “Upside down!” We wrap our arms like we’re giving ourselves a hug (like bats wrap their wings), lay down on our backs and put our feet up to the ceiling while we pretend to sleep. We even talk about how bats are nocturnal. I’m always impressed how many of them already know that word! Then we wake up and go flying again =) I use the song “Flit and Fly” from Wee Sing for Halloween, which is an all around great album for Halloween fun in dance class.

Do you dance about bats? How are you incorporating Halloween into your classroom?
